A security guard, Kemba Aziz 26, attached to Alert guards was yesterday sentenced to 4 years in jail for assaulting Solomon Hamala a red paper journalist in Iganga district.

the presiding judge, Silvia Nvanungi, Iganga grade one chief magistrate while passing her sentence said Justice must not only be done, but find the accused guilty of assault contrary to section 236 of the penal act code and since he was remorseful thus sentencing him to 4 years in jail.

Prosecution alleges that on 13 Jan this year, Kemba and his co-accused Isiko Yakubu who is still at large assaulted Hamala as he covered women traders protesting the proposed eviction from the taxi park by Iganga Municipal Council. The duo are said to have hit Hamala with a baton on the head and dragged him on tarmac for close to twenty meters.

Robert Sempala, the national coordinator, Uganda human rights network for journalist, expressed excitement over the ruling stating that it will act as a lesson and deterrent measures to security personnel’s and the general public who continue to use their powers  wrongly and cause harm to innocent people especially journalist to desist from their action.

According to Sempala, this is the first ruling this year in which a security personnel is faced with real justice but says several state security personal remains to be implicated in crime against journalist. He appealed to the police to arrest Isiko and bring him to book.
