Blood bank slogan of donate blood and save lives may not be the priority issues in communities across northern Uganda as people continue to shun blood donation drives despite its enormous benefits.
Speaking to the press at blood bank offices at senior quarters in the outskirts of Gulu town yesterday, Dr. Sam Uringtho, the principal medical officer I/C Gulu regional blood bank, expressed concern over the low turn up of people during open blood donation drives and urged communities to embrace the cause wholeheartedly as they too continue to tirelessly save patients lives in their undertaking.
“Blood is the only thing in this world that is irreplaceable because it cannot be manufactured but got from passionate donors like you” Sam said. Social life styles related to over drinking and poor dietary needs besides the prolonged 2 decade war in the region, made areas like Adjumani, Pader, Agago and Kitgum inaccessible for the locals to adapt to this cause right from its inception.
However with the glaring peace and continued access to health care services, Sam is skeptical that the population will realize the importance of blood donation and start contributing freely and not only when they are in a fixed need for blood transfusion.
